Rules and Guidelines:

  1. To participate in the Southwest Laughfest Comedy Competition one must first apply online at southwestlaughfest.com beginning on April 1, 2015. Applicants must have a prepared solo stand-up comedy routine. All applicants must be 18 or older to enter as an act. Applicants who are under the age of 18 may compete, but must be approved by LaughterHours Comedy by submitting a request to media@laughterhourscomedy.com. Comedy routine should not exceed 5 minutes. Deadline for application submissions are May 8, 2015.
  2. All applicants must pay a non-refundable entrance fee upon submitting an application ($35 dollars). Applicants must be available for their respective preliminary dates (May 9th thru 17th, 2015), the semifinals (June 18, 2015) and the finale (June 20, 2015).
  3. The use of unoriginal material and plagiarism will result in the applicant’s immediate disqualification from the Southwest Laughfest Funniest in the Southwest Competition.
  4. Southwest Laughfest Funniest in the Southwest Preliminary Shows will be held between May 9 and May 17, 2015 at their respective satellite venues. Approved applicants will compete only on one of those dates, not all. Each preliminary show will comprise of no more than 30 applicants (a total of 150 applicants can perform). Applicant preliminary show material must be 3-5 minutes. The amount of time given on date of show performance will be determined by the number of applicants present. Judges for the preliminary shows will consist of LaughterHours Comedy board members, and/or respected figures in the local artistic and comedic communities, and audience vote. Applicants will be judged on Material, Stage Presence, Delivery & Technique, and Audience Response & Rapport. Only 1 of the highest scoring competitors from each preliminary show will continue to the finale on June 20 , 2015.
  5. Southwest Laughfest Funniest in the Southwest Finale show will be held on June 20, 2015 beginning at 8:00pm at Tricky Falls, 209 S El Paso St, El Paso, TX 79901. Only the chosen winners from the semi-finals and the redemption round will be showcased at this event. Contestant finale show material must be 7-10 minutes. Judges chosen for the finale will be non-affiliated with LaughterHours Comedy staff, volunteers, and board members, but be respected figures in the comedic community and also based on audience vote. Finalists will be judged on Material, Stage Presence, Delivery & Technique, and Audience Response & Rapport. There will be three prizes given out at the end of the event: First Place, Runner-up, and Third Place.
  6. Prizes will be given out to selected winners in the finale. First Place prize–$5,000, Runner-up–$50, Third Place–$0.50. All finale participants will receive a Southwest Laughfest Shirt, awards, and a promotional bag of goodies from our sponsors.
